The temporomandibular joint (jaw joint) or TMJ is one of the most heavily used joints in the body.

The TMJ/jaw is used in many day-to-day tasks such as eating, talking, breathing and facial expression. This high workload combined with the complexity of the joint structure means that the TMJ/jaw can quite often be a source of pain and dysfunction, which is referred to as TMJ disorder or TMD.

Symptoms of TMJ/Jaw Pain

Symptoms of TMJ/jaw pain and dysfunction can vary with everyone. The most common symptoms include:

  • Pain around jaw and ear
  • Clicking or grinding noises
  • Limited range of movement
  • Jaw locking
  • Ear clicking or popping (disc displacement)
  • Headache or neck pain
  • Teeth clenching
  • Pain getting worse as the day goes on
  • Uncomfortable bite

Why Is My Jaw Clicking?

The clicking or popping that is often associated with this disorder most often comes from movement and displacement of the articular cartilage disc that sits between the joint surfaces.

The clicking can occur throughout different phases of movement and in all different directions. It may be a result of joint hypermobility or degradation of the cartilage itself.

Causes of TMJ/Jaw Pain

The cause of TMJ/jaw pain is likely to be related to several contributing factors, these include:

  • Nocturnal jaw clenching
  • Teeth grinding
  • Psychological stress
  • Local trauma or history of trauma
  • Osteoarthritis
  • Rheumatoid arthritis
  • Joint hypermobility syndromes
  • Derangement/displacement of cartilage
  • Occlusal problems – poor bite, underbite, overbite
  • Removal of wisdom teeth
  • Poor cervical posture
  • Neuropsychological factors

Chiropractic Treatment of TMJ/Jaw Pain

For some issues such as dental occlusion and teeth grinding patients may need to consult their dentist to have a splint or plate made for them. Chiropractic therapy for TMJ opening disorders is usually successful.
