Like other spinal conditions, the incidence is seemingly increasing due to modern lifestyle habits.

Thoracic and rib pain is a very common presentation at Impulse Chiropractic. Like other spinal conditions, the incidence is seemingly increasing due to modern lifestyle habits. Increased usage of technology, increased sedentary lifestyles, working from home and adoption of poor postures has contributed to more people suffering from thoracic and rib pain.

Most thoracic and rib issues that we deal with have developed on the back of poor posture and increased static loading of this part of the body. This generally occurs in the sitting position. More time spent in these positions leads to a reduction in thoracic mobility. Pain develops in the area as soft tissues and joints can’t cope with the loading and become fatigued and inflamed. Reduction in thoracic mobility can also be a contributing factor to other issues in surrounding areas of the body such as the neck, low back, shoulder and ribs.

The thoracic spine plays an important central role in connecting the neck, low back and shoulder joints together as a unit. It plays an important role in load transfer through these areas as well as creating dynamic movement. The 12 rib bones attach onto each segment of the thoracic spine, making up the thoracic cage. This area of the body also has an important relationship with breathing function.

Thoracic and rib pain can occur as a result of trauma or repetitive strain/poor posture. It can also occur secondary to other conditions such as osteoporosis, ankylosis spondylitis, scoliosis, osteoarthritis or Scheuermann’s disease.
