Before cupping can commence, a physical assessment will take place to determine where the cups will go.
We use plastic or silicon cups with a rubber pump to help create the vacuum effect inside the cup. This causes the skin and tissue to rise.
The blood vessels inside the cup will expand and this is used to create a massage effect on the tissue.
We place the cups in areas of the body where there is plenty of available muscle, for example, the back, glutes, thighs, legs, shoulders, and chest. We then leave the cups for approximately 5-10 minutes.
Cupping can be used on healthy, symptom free patients or for those suffering from pain or dysfunction. Cupping can be used to treat generalised myofascial tension and tightness, headaches, low back pain or neck pain.
Some of the benefits of cupping therapy include:
Cupping is a low-risk and very safe treatment, although there are a few minor side effects to be aware of. You may experience some light headedness or dizziness, sweating or nausea. Following the treatment, the skin in the area where the cups were placed may become irritated and bruised. The marks that will be left on the skin typically fade in 1-10 days.
At Impulse Chiropractic we use cupping in combination with other treatment methods to help try to achieve the best outcomes for you. If you would like to try cupping or have any questions about the treatment, please ask our chiropractors.
