Reformer Pilates

What is Clinical Reformer Pilates?

Clinical reformer Pilates is a specialised form of Pilates that is tailored for individuals with specific health conditions or physical issues. It combines the principles of traditional Pilates with clinical insights to address individual needs, particularly focusing on rehabilitation, injury prevention, and managing chronic conditions. It is a form of exercise that has been around for generations, however in recent times it has come into popularity and you have probably seen them popping up everywhere!

At Impulse Chiropractic, we offer clinical Pilates sessions to our patients. Clinical Pilates varies from regular mat or equipment based Pilates that you may see in a studio or gym. Some of the key aspects of Clinical Pilates include:

  1. Personalisation: Exercises are customised based on a patient’s medical history, physical condition, and specific goals. This ensures that the program is safe and effective for the individual’s unique needs.
  2. Rehabilitation Focus: It’s often used in rehabilitation settings to help people recover from injuries or surgeries, such as back pain, joint issues, or post-operative recovery.
  3. More Qualified Instructors: Clinical Pilates instructors will have more advanced training and qualifications in both Pilates and anatomy, as well as being qualified in their allied health profession.
  4. Controlled Movements: Exercises are performed with precise control and alignment to ensure they are performed safely and effectively, reducing the risk of further injury.
  5. 1:1 Sessions: Clinical Pilates sessions are conducted as 1:1 sessions at Impulse Chiropractic. This means that you have all the focus and attention on you, so that your technique can be monitored closely. This ensures that you get the most out of what you’re doing and avoiding further injury or pain.
  6. Integration with Other Therapies: At Impulse Chiropractic, often our Pilates patients are taking part in Chiropractic treatment to help further improve their condition.

Reformer Pilates

At Impulse Chiropractic, the main form of Pilates that we practice is Clinical Reformer Pilates. Reformer Pilates is a form of Pilates that utilises a large piece of equipment called a reformer. Basically, it is a type of bench that has a sliding carriage attached to a variety of different tensioned springs for resistance. Many of the exercises involve the movement of this carriage using another part of the reformer, such as a foot bar, plate, hand/foot straps and boards.

The reformer machine is a highly adaptable piece of equipment. Clinicians love to use this for patients as exercises can be tailored to all types of people and fitness levels. There aren’t many situations where we can’t find a way to use the reformer for someone! It also delivers a low impact form of resistance training that can be easy on the joints and tendons when comparing to other forms of resistance training. This makes it a safer and accessible form of exercise for people suffering from certain types of pain, injuries and conditions.

There are thousands of exercises that can be executed on the reformer that target all areas of the body. Clinicians also like reformer Pilates as the exercises can be controlled and very specifically targeted to certain movements and muscle groups. Reformer Pilates isn’t just for rehab and injury though and can also be used to help improve strength and conditioning for more athletic reasons too.

To summarise, clinical Pilates is a great form of exercise that can help with many different issues. Our sessions are very specialised to each individual and condition, this allows you a better chance of getting the most out of your sessions and achieving you health goals!
